Jesus Prayed for Unity

Have you ever noticed how many different denominations can be found in Jonesboro alone? A quick look at the Yellow Pages reveals listings for over 30 different denominations, and that probably doesn’t even cover them all. You might think this speaks well of our city, that it shows we are a God-fearing, church-going community, but is this kind of diversity what Jesus intended? Did Jesus die so there would be so much division among those who profess Him to be Lord and Savior?

The answer is a resounding NO! John 17 records the prayer of Jesus shortly before going to the cross. In it He was praying for us when He said, “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us… that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me.”

Jesus wants there to be unity among His believers. The only way for us to have this oneness is to get back to the simple words of the Bible, and until we do that, we will never be what the Lord intended us to be.
