"What is Written in the Law?

A lawyer once came to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  Jesus answered, “What is written in the law?  What is your reading of it?”  The answer to the lawyer’s question was found written in the law of God.  If he just took time to go to the written word then the answer could be found.

On many occasions Jesus was questioned during his ministry.  Some of the questioners were sincere while others had ulterior motives.  In answering these questions Jesus went to the written word of God.  In answering a question about divorce, he said “HAVE YOU NOT READ...” (Matt.19:4).  He reminded the Sadducees that they were wrong about the resurrection because they did not know the Scriptures nor the power of God.  Jesus went to the written word in Exodus 3 to show that there was a resurrection since God said, “I am the  God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”

When Jesus faced temptation by Satan in the wilderness he went to the written word to determine what he should do.  With all three temptations by Satan, he responded by saying, “IT IS WRITTEN”.   When we have questions about the Lord and His will today, our questions are answered in the same way.  We must go to Scriptures to find the answer.  Paul said that when we read we can understand the will of the Lord (Eph.3:4; Eph.5:17)  The answers cannot be found by going to our religious leaders, family, or relying upon our feelings.  The question that must always be asked is “What is written in the law?”
